The Second Week of Pre-Sleeve Surgery Diet
Week Two:
Bloodwork was done, a meeting with the surgery coordinator, better-eating habits, more exercise and emotional rollercoasters.
I really need to take a pic every Monday to show our weight loss… next week I will start that!
Monday, May 7th, 2018
The Day’s Events:
Had to get my blood drawn for the basic “fasting blood work” they always want. Took two needle sticks to get my veins to cooperate but they got what they needed.
- Emotions:
- Stewart: “Dinner was good. It felt good eating healthy at dinner.”
- Becky: My emotions are out of whack today anyway just from life stuff not due to the diet. So the brownies my daughter made is especially hard to resist today but logic is winning, the calories are just not worth it. My ankles hurt when I get 2/3 through my workout on the elliptical and it was hard to finish my 10 minutes today. However, I do really think my staying away from so much caffeine is helping me think clearer though. I do go back and forth between being ready for surgery and scared to death to have it done.
Stats: I think logging all our stats once a week as a bit too often for any real measurements results so I will log our stuff at the first of each month and our weight once a week. I am also thinking about doing our stats on Sunday because I want to show off the progress at the end of the week instead of the beginning! So this week I will share our end progress too!
- Weight:
- Stewart:
- Start Weight 4/29/18: 348.6
- Current Weight 5/07/18: 334.6
- ↓ 14 LBS
- Becky:
- Start Weight 4/19/18: 305
- Current Weight 5/07/18: 298.8
- ↓ 6.2 LBS

Since we were in town (we live about 30 minutes away from our doctor) we ate in town after starving till 10 so I could get the blood work done. We ate at Chic-fil-a but just grabbed nuggets and a soda instead of sandwiches. It was actually better calories wise to do that than grab a salad. We wanted to do better for supper so we did a “Healthy Chicken Parmesan.” Was not sure about the zucchini spirals but they actually we not to bad! Next time I may drain them a bit better, they were a bit watery but they only taste like the sauce. Pasta always leaves me feeling hungry again in an hour so I am hoping the spirals will last me a bit longer.
Healthy Chicken Parmesan
1/2 Package Zucchini Spirals (boiled and drained)
2 Lightly Breaded Chicken Breast Strips (baked)
1/8 cup Ragu Traditional Spaghetti Sauce (heated)
Sprinkle of Parmesan Cheese

The Day’s Events: We eat breakfast at 7-10am, he eats oatmeal and I usually grab leftovers, I cook a bigger meal at “lunch” at 2-4pm when hubby gets off work, and then a finale small “meal” around 7-8pm, usually a sandwich and a snack of a granola bar or fruit. I wish I could move our meals back an hour or two so we wouldn’t eat again so late but it is hard to do with Stewart at work when lunch would normally be.
- Emotions:
- Stewart:
- Becky: Feeling fairly frustrated today. I am tired of feeling hungry more often than not, I hurt when I try to work out and it is soooo boring to work out and to be honest, I am a bit jealous of my husband’s success. He can drop 10-15 pounds in a week and I get stuck at less than 2 pounds lost this week. I know “women lose slower than men” but dang! He gets to eat about 700 calories more than me but is way more active so burns more than me and it is discouraging BIG TIME! And also… I have no idea how to cook healthy foods that I will like or that the kids will eat. I am surprised they haven’t formed a mutiny about the food lately since we are picky eaters. I hate mushy food and veggies are mushy. Stewart will eat just about anything and be fine. And my dang emotions…. they make me just want to throw up my hands and quit about everything and sit and pout. (((Just Having a Bad Day)))

The Day’s Events: Got hubby’s FMLA leave packet in from the Post Office. From what I understand he has to sign up for FMLA leave since he will be having an extended sick leave from work when surgery time comes. It is a way to protect his job. We have to get the surgeon’s people to fill it out and return it in 15 days.
- Emotions:
- Stewart:
- Becky: Feeling pretty good about keeping under calorie limit today even though my emotions are still wonky from stuff going on in life. I am fighting depression and have no motivation to work out. At some point, I have got to get serious about exercise. I figured one thing at a time, give me a couple weeks adjusting my eating then try to work out. I just really hate hurting when I work out. Doc told me once if you hurt or hate what your work out is you are likely to not do it again. That is so true!

The Day’s Events: I am trying to keep each meal around 500 calories to stay under my calorie “budget.”
- Emotions:
- Stewart:
- Becky: Still pouting about not losing weight so I looked up if stress can cause you not to lose weight. Yep! So I guess I will just have to deal with that, just lovely.

The Day’s Events: We swung by the surgeon to see if we could get the FMLA papers done. Nope! We can’t fill out the papers because the doc hasn’t even scheduled the surgery and some of the questions are post-op questions. Not sure what hubby’s boss will say about that. Shirley went over some basic stuff about nutrition and what it would be like once we have small stomachs. She said eating after 7 is a big no-no (so we HAVE to change that) and talked about the portion sizes we will have after surgery which is less than the palm of our hand. She suggested we start portion control more now so we will mentally be used to it. We did find out that because back in February the doctor told hubby to lose weight and it was on record that he may be able to get his surgery a little earlier than me (because I hate doctors and haven’t been in a while.) I guess that is good for him. We have to schedule an appointment with a shrink on the list she gave us and she is supposed to be getting an appointment with the nutritionist. She just got the papers two days ago from the doc even though we went to see him on the 1st but I am choosing not to worry about the timing because God’s timing is perfect.
- Emotions:
- Stewart: He was kind of spooked when he realized he could get the surgery as soon as June but after talking with his co-workers he is going to have to tell Shirley to schedule him for the end of July because of that as soon as he can get off work.
- Becky: I was a bit bummed that he could get his surgery a few months before me, I mean I am already way behind him on weight loss and for him to get a two-month head start was depressing. But I guess since he has to delay surgery because of his work it puts us back to the same timeline basically. I worry he will get all skinny and I’ll still be a big ol’ fatty. I am not sure why that bothers me except it makes me more self-conscious about my own fat and all these women will be after my husband thinking they can get him since he is with “Big Ol’ Bertha Butt” and they are normal sized. I know my husband is devoted to us but I still do not like women looking at my husband.

I drink tea every once in a while but I mostly stay away from it. I am thrilled I didn’t have a big problem coming off the caffeine. I really need to up my water intake but I normally don’t drink much.
Exercise:
He is a powerhouse mowing, swimming doing all kinds of stuff (that is why he is losing so much), while I just sit. I am struggling with making myself move more. I am a computer geek and sit a lot doing my stuff online. I really hate working out. I just don’t know how to motivate myself.

The Day’s Events: Spent the evening playing volleyball with the family!
- Emotions:
- Stewart: Likes to play volleyball but always worried about the pain from it afterward.
- Becky: I am pretty excited that I actually lost a few pounds today! Now I have this motivation to do more and eat less. Crazy I know! I like the feeling I get when I accomplish weight loss so I want to do more to get more. Before I wasn’t losing anything significant just ounces but when you get on a scale and it is a couple of whole pounds it helps boost your motivation!

The Day’s Events: We went out to eat at Subway. Not a great “Mother’s Day Dinner” but it was something that would keep us in our calories limits, then we went hiking around the lake today with the kids, walked almost a mile. We are trying to learn to make good choices with our food and not change our lifestyle too much.
Stats: I am doing our stats on Sunday because I want to show off the progress at the end of the week instead of the beginning!

- Emotions:
- Stewart: Stewart: He thinks he could measure now and it shows up that inches have been lost. Says his clothes are fitting much better and he can tell the difference.
- Becky: Woke up bummed but got a bit excited that I lost a few more pounds! Craving chocolate a lot lately. Feeling a bit down today. Read up on some of the stuff to expect after surgery, maybe that isn’t the best idea because it spooks me about the “what ifs.” I need to hold on to the scripture: “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:34

Zucchini “pasta” doesn’t bake well, so since that side dish didn’t work out, we just tossed a salad and had that with our fried chicken.
