We had tried for several years to grow corn in our garden. Most of the time, we would get a few spindly stalks with no ears, or we would grow great stalks with scrawny ears. This year, after our purple hull harvest, Stewart decided to plant some corn—just to have something growing in the pea patch. We assumed it would do poorly as it had in the past, but much to our surprise, it did really well.
So that meant, harvest time had come on our mini farm. The corn was ready, and shucking it by the pig pen seemed like the perfect place to get the job done. We’d shuck the husks and toss them to our mini pot-belly piggies, Gertie and Hamlet, who eat anything. Then we’d trim off any bad spots and share the scraps with our mini donkey, too. Our little piggies thought they were in heaven as they foraged in the corn husk pile, making happy snooting and snorting sounds the whole time.
Adam came up to me with corn silk on his head and said, “Mom, now I know how they make wigs!” I just love that child’s imagination. If you have to do work, you might as well make it entertaining. Farm kids are just the best, but I may be biased.
Once the shucking was done, my work began. Each cob had to be washed, with the leftover silk removed. Then I filled my largest pot with water, brought it to a rolling boil, and dropped in twelve ears at a time—enough to fill two gallon-size freezer bags. After ten minutes, I fished them out to cool before bagging them up for the freezer. We harvested over 290 ears of corn from that small patch and blanched and bagged about fifty gallon-size bags of corn on the cob.

Tri-Birthday Party

Happy Birthday, Austin, Anna, and Adam
OK, so this may be the “lazy and cheap” way to throw a birthday party, but it works for us—and honestly, I think it’s pretty brilliant. My kids’ birthdays fall just two weeks apart, starting in mid-October and wrapping up in mid-November. My solution? One party smack in the middle for all three. We keep it small and invite only family. It saves so much time and money buying food, cake, and decorations for just one gathering. Plus, with Thanksgiving coming up in November, it’s nice to only have one family get-together before the holiday rush.
Aside from our tri-party, on or around each child’s actual birthday, we make the day all about them. We cook a big breakfast of their choice, then head out to the movies, putt-putt golf, the zoo, or wherever they want to go. After that, we grab dinner out and do some birthday-money shopping. I also bake whichever dessert they pick. It’s much easier than the traditional one-party-per-kid approach, and it keeps their day full, fun, and completely focused on them.
They’ve always been happy with this setup, and this year was no exception. I have some awesome kids. They were patient and took turns blowing out candles and opening presents. Here’s how we do the candles: I start with all fifteen on the cake for my oldest, then remove five and relight for Anna, then take away two more and relight again for Adam. That way, each of them gets their own “Happy Birthday” song and a chance to blow out their candles. Their dad grilled burgers, we enjoyed cake, and afterward the cousins played while the adults sat around chatting until it was time to head home.
A successful party for 2010!
