Week One of Pre-Sleeve Surgery Liquid Diet
Liquids diets are for the birds, no wait, they eat seeds… stupid lucky birds.
Stewart needs to have 90-100 grams of protein and drink 4-6 bottles of water
Becky needs 80-90 grams of protein and drink 4-5 bottles of water

- We “ate” a Healthwise Brand “Cream of Chicken with Vegetables” it was also good with little flakes of veggies and every once in a while you got a flake and could chew something LOL (15 g protein)
- We drank Premier Brand Clear Protein drink “Fruit Punch” also yummy but very sweet (20 g protein)
- Supper:
- Healthwise Brand “Beef Broth” not great… at all. I added a “Pop & Cook” onion ice cube that helped a lot only a little added sodium (20mg)
-

- Breakfast:
- Guilty snack: 20 Hot fries (split into 2 servings of 10) 93 calories, 2g protein, 280 sodium
Total Proteins: 95
Feeling:
- Stewart: I have a slight headache, hungry as hell, wanting food, sustenance and beef broth is nasty! Anxiety and panic and a weirdness about my body, like every cell in my body was anxious. Feeling weak.
- Becky: I have had a slight headache all afternoon, feeling hungry a lot, feeling kind of weak. I asked on the Facebook Baritastic Social Page they say it is just detoxing and after day 3 it will be better… Hoping so!
Day Two, August 4th:
-
- Breakfast:
- We drank an Unjury “Chocolate Splendor” Protein Shake (21 g protein)
- Lunch:
- Homemade beef broth: 3 quarts water, 2 large steaks, 1 can green beans, 3 pop and cook onion cubes, a couple dashes of garlic powder, pepper, creole season, natures season, and Himalayan pink salt. nutrients are unknown but I assume the sodium is to high but my goodness it tasted MUCH better than the packets
- We drank Premier Brand Clear Protein drink “Fruit Punch” (20 g protein)
- Supper:
- Homemade beef broth mixed with unflavored Unjury Protein Powder (21 g protein)
-
- Snack:
- Sugerfree Strawberry Jello (not my favorite)
- Light & Fit Lemon Meringue Greek Yogurt (12g protein)
- Breakfast:
- Guilty snack: Sweety & Salty Peanut Granola Bar (20 carbs, 55 sodium, & 4 g protein)
Total Proteins: 102
Feeling:
- Stewart: Hungry a lot but manageable and a worse headache. Still feeling fairly weak.
- Becky: Today I had a basic break down, crying because I was hungry and wanting anything other than a liquid. Wanting to give up, saying it was all cruel to make us starve. Feeling like everything was awful and I was ready to not have the surgery. Very weak and irritable. My headache was still ongoing so I finally ate a granola bar and took some Tylenol.
Day Three, August 5th:
- Breakfast:
- We drank an Unjury “Chocolate Splendor” Protein Shake made with Lactaid Milk (29 g protein)

Total Proteins: 137
Feeling:
- Stewart: Actually felt like doing stuff around the house. Not feeling as hungry. The milk in the shakes help.
- Becky: Feeling pretty good today, no headache and not starving. I’m not sure if it is due to the chicken strips I ate or if I am just getting used to it.
Day Four, August 6th:
Monday In Office Weigh In:
Stewart: 307.4 ↓ 10.6 LBs since Friday
Becky: 278.6 ↓ 5.4 LBs since Friday
- Breakfast: Unjury “Chocolate Splendor” Protein Shake made with Lactaid Milk (29 g protein)
- Lunch: Homemade beef broth mixed with Health Wise Creamy Chicken and Veggies, not the greatest but tolerable (15 g protein)
- Supper: Unjury “Chocolate Splendor” Protein Shake (21 g protein)
- Snack: Light & Fit Lemon Meringue Greek Yogurt (12g protein)
- Guilty snack: 2.5 saltine crackers with the soup to be able to finish it
Total Proteins: 77
Feeling:
- Stewart: Feeling ok, got out and worked around the yard.
- Becky: Feeling weak, moody, tired of liquids, annoyed because the surgery organizer lady said we shouldn’t use milk in our shakes because it is “added calories we don’t need” and that me losing 5 pounds in 3 days didn’t seem like enough in her mind… guess I will be giving in to the demands of the doctor and just accepting that I have to starve to make them happy. Tired to cook salt-free broth, turned out bleh so I will just suffer through drinking the chocolate shakes and nothing else. Feeling pretty bummed because I miss food, I miss my routine snack at night with my hubby, miss going out to eat when we go to town. Just feeling very negative and hungry all the time.
Milestones!!
Day Five, August 7th:
-
- Breakfast: Unjury “Chocolate Splendor” Protein Shake (21 g protein)
slice of cheese (3g protein) - Lunch: 2 pieces turkey lunch meat and a slice of cheese (15g protein) Granola Bar (calories 170) (4g protein)
- Supper:
- Snack: 1/2 Premier Tropical Punch drink made into an Icee with a 1 C diet cranberry juice (10g protein)
- Guilty snack: Tapito Doritos 5 chips (70 calories)(1 protein)
Total Proteins: 87
Feeling:
- Stewart: Very weak after mowing the yard and have been hungry most of the day and I HATE the water-based shakes and broths.
- Becky: Sick of my stomach growling constantly so I ate turkey and cheese for lunch. It was satisfying but wore off soon, of course. I figure if I eat a little something solid but stayed within reason of calories and proteins then it was worth it to keep me from having a breakdown. I am not a medical adviser but you have to do what you have to do to keep sane along with losing the weight. My life was already super stressful and I am doing all I can to balance weight loss with sanity and frankly, I don’t care if they don’t like it. As long as I lose my 15 pounds then we are fine.
Day Six, August 8th:
-
- Breakfast: Unjury “Chocolate Splendor” Protein Shake (21 g protein)
- Lunch: 2 pieces turkey lunch meat and a slice of cheese (15 g protein) Premier Brand Clear Protein drink “Fruit Punch” (20 g protein)
- Supper: 2 pieces turkey lunch meat and a slice of cheese (15 g protein)
- Snack: Unjury “Chocolate Splendor” Protein Shake (21 g protein)
- Guilty snack: Tapito Doritos 5 chips (70 calories)(1 protein)
Total Proteins: 93
Feeling:
- Stewart:
- Becky: Feeling like I cheated bad but when you do the nutrients it stays within our boundaries. I know several people online say their doc says they can eat a small healthy meal along with their protein shakes so…
Day Seven, August 9th:
-
- Breakfast: Unjury “Chocolate Splendor” Protein Shake (21 g protein)
- Lunch: Healthwise Cream of Chicken with veggies & 3 crackers
- Supper: 2 pieces turkey lunch meat and a slice of cheese (15 g protein) Premier Brand Clear Protein drink “Fruit Punch” (20 g protein)

- Becky: Went walking with my hubby & kids on a small trail by the lake. Only walked 3/4 mile and was weak a lot but felt really good afterward that I walked felt more energized than I have so far. Maybe the exercise helps? (duh)

Becky’s Thoughts on the week: This week was ROUGH! The first few days were the hardest, I can’t say I was better after three days like most do, I cried every night missing food, missing routines, missing my habits, missing my traditions. I was hungry a lot but by the end of the week I felt better, last night I didn’t cry, I accepted this is what I have to do and am ok with it (not happy but not in mourning any more) It really is a grieving process as silly as that sounds but food has been attached to every aspect of our lives. I miss going out to eat with my hubby and feeling like an person instead of just a mom, I miss our TV snack times because hubby would fix the food and I was waited on by him which is a nice little reverse role experience, I miss picnics with the kids, I’m planning a birthday party for my sister and I can’t eat the food we have to prepare which just seems so WRONG! I mourned for our food and family and traditions on so many levels, BUT I am better it just took longer than I expected. Maybe because I know I am half way through this part of it and pray that it is easier once the surgery happens. I look at those numbers above and think, I am just now getting back down to the size I was when I was going to do the surgery a few years back and all I did was gain 30 pounds since because I can’t keep it off by myself like I thought I could. I know I will never be a size 6 (I wouldn’t really want to be) but I want to be under 200 pounds in a year or so and that would be amazing! It’s something I could have already been if I had not chickened out last time and honestly life was less stressful back then so it would have probably been better to have done it before which is why I push myself to go through with it because no time ever feels right, life is never “just right” and makes you feel at peace with any surgery (or anything else). Sometimes you just have to say, “carpe’ diem” and seize the day you have ahead of you in spite of all the chaos around you. Live each day independently from the rest. Just say to yourself, “Today I can do this.” and let tomorrow worry about itself.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:34
Till Next time…
Peace, Love, & Blessings,
Becky
